Yoga and Meditation for stress management

Faced with the various aggressions of everyday life, we set up fight or flight reactions. Negative thoughts gradually take hold and imprint themselves on the body. Muscles tense up, the body becomes tense. Breathing becomes more shallow and rapid. The body then functions less well. So stress, the body’s natural reaction to a one-off danger, can become a chronic, pathological condition. It can also encourage the onset of certain illnesses.

The practice of yoga and meditation can provide solutions by stretching muscles profoundly and gently, by establishing deep, regular breathing, by helping to improve our posture and our mental state, and encouraging inner listening and attention. Of course, this must be part of a more general healthy lifestyle (food, activity, etc.).

More specifically, certain areas of the body are particularly affected, and it’s worth working on them: the diaphragm (the main breathing muscle), the solar plexus, which innervates the surrounding organs, the phrenic nerves that pass through the back of the neck and which play an essential role in relaxing the diaphragm, the shoulder blade area, the abdomen, etc.

The idea is to practise regularly in class and at home (even for short sessions). It is this regularity that enables you to apply the techniques of yoga to everyday life gradually. Stressful events have less of a hold on us. We become calmer and more serene, and negative emotions and thoughts are reduced.
