Yoga for Preventing Osteoporosis-Related Fractures

Almost 20 years ago, a study had already shed light on the therapeutic potential of yoga for managing chronic lower back pain. While yoga is widely acknowledged for its positive effects on the musculoskeletal system, emerging evidence suggests a potential role in preventing fractures associated with osteoporosis.

Although not yet formally endorsed by the medical community, a groundbreaking study conducted by Dr. Loren M. Fishman of Columbia University in December 2015 delved into the impact of regular yoga practice on fracture risk in individuals with osteopenia or osteoporosis.

Over the course of a decade, this study delivered promising outcomes: among those dedicated to a regular yoga practice, not a single fracture was documented, and no adverse effects were reported. Remarkably, bone density exhibited stability, and there was an enhancement in collagen quality.

The proposed explanations for these positive results are intriguing: the engagement of muscles in diverse yoga postures, involving both agonistic and antagonistic movements, contributes to the reinforcement of bone formation and the improvement of its overall structure. Furthermore, the cultivation of balance and flexibility through yoga diminishes the likelihood of falls, subsequently reducing the risk of fractures. Additionally, the reported benefits extend beyond the physical realm, encompassing the relaxation response and improvements in self-esteem and self-awareness.

While it’s essential to note that this correlation is not yet universally acknowledged within the medical field, the cumulative evidence strongly suggests that integrating yoga into one’s routine may contribute significantly to overall well-being and fracture prevention.

In conclusion, let’s spread the word: practicing yoga isn’t just about flexibility and relaxation; it might also be a valuable ally in the prevention of osteoporosis-related fractures and global health.
